Supporting all people involved in sport across the county.
We have sports chaplains at Derby County FC, Chesterfield FC, Derbyshire CCC and at triathlon events.
With the support of Sports Chaplaincy UK, chaplains offer pastoral support to players, coaches, administrative staff and fans, providing a measure of stability in the pressurised and rapidly changing world of professional sport.
The Revd Tony Luke
Derby County FC
Tony has served as chaplain to Derby County since 2005. As a passionate Rams fan, he was asked by the Club to take on the role of chaplain and until very recently most of his ministry has been during the week at the Moor Farm training ground, where Tony gives pastoral support to players, staff and academy scholars.
However, a new working agreement having been agreed between Tony, the Club and Sports Chaplaincy UK, from December 2013 Tony will also have a chaplaincy role on match-days to stewards, staff and the 30,000 supporters at the Pride Park Stadium. This is an encouraging development, which should considerably raise the profile of chaplaincy.
I provide pastoral support for anybody at the club who would like to speak to me. There is quite a broad spectrum to the work I do. People tend to think of footballers with their big salaries but it is an insecure environment that can affect people in different ways. Depression is quite common in sport, with players who might have contract issues or injuries. It’s a great feeling to see the players doing well when I’ve worked with them through their good times and bad. The club have been brilliant in accepting the work I do and I have had positive relationships with all of the managers. Chaplaincy gives you great access to engage with people away from your usual line of work. It’s about going into a different area to help. I sum up the chaplain’s role as: Being able. Being there. Being seen.
